Bike Portraits

Bike Portraits are photographic collages of people with their bicycles taken in Hull, Hackney, Bristol and Cambridge.

I produced over 100 Bike Portraits during my Postdoctoral Research Fellowship (2010-2011) on the ESRC funded Cycling Cultures research project at UEL.

Inspired by David Hockney’s collages and comprised of up to 60 images, each portrait takes on a different shape. Left deliberately messy with jagged edges and exaggerated horizons, the series goes some way to reflect the unique locations, personalities and multi-dimensional experience of cycling in different English urban areas. I include a bit of myself in each image, thereby contributing to the collaborative and dynamic nature of the work.
